Foothills Park & Recreation District is facing a $143,000 budget shortfall for 2012. One of the potential solutions has many homeowners angry.Currently, Foothills Park & Recreation District has six parcels equaling more than 30 acres of open space for sale. One of these parcels include the northwest corner of Coal Mine and Wadsworth. This site is currently being negotiated with a commercial developer and the terms of the contract will be finalized on October 11, 2011 at the Foothills Board of Directs Board Meeting. This parcel of open space will be rezoned to commercial use. There are several steps that the district must undergo to change zoning and resident input is encouraged at all public meetings.
Some concerns about the development of this site include the destruction of wildlife habitat, decreased home values, additional traffic and a general concern for a perceived lack of communication from the recreation district. However, some may favor the idea as the lot has been considered as an eye sore and the vacant lot could generate much needed revenue for the district.
